Stop Swimming with Sharks

Find Friendlier Waters

When my dad’s health started failing, he had no plan for his estate. I had no idea about the extent of his wealth or what he wanted to happen with his assets because we had never had a conversation about it.

So I put together a meeting with an advisor (even though Dad could have misinterpreted my intentions) and took my parents to the meeting. When the adviser finished talking about what he does and the benefits of his company, he asked, “Any questions?”

My parents shook their heads, and we were escorted down the hall to the estate-planning attorney who postulated about the planning options utilized by people of my parent’s financial means.

Looking back, I realize how badly that meeting went. It provided no direction and no answers. In fact, neither of my parents even understood the language the advisors used.

To this day, it crushes me to think of how much my parents missed by not finding the right professionals to handle what was most important to them. Make sure your legacy and your wealth stay intact by finding someone who speaks your language so no one is left swimming alone in the deep end.

Wealth is more than money. Don’t just plan for your future, live it right now. Pass it on and share the insights like this that you find valuable.
