What this year’s deficit could mean for your retirement

USDebtClock

Washington has a debt problem, and it could affect your retirement income.

The Headline That Deserves Your Attention

The U.S. federal budget deficit reached $1.992 trillion for fiscal year 2026.1 This comes on top of news that just a couple of months ago the U.S. gross national debt had topped $40 trillion.2 Large deficits put pressure on Washington, and with debt and deficit numbers at or near record highs, higher taxes are among the likely tools lawmakers could use to try to dig out of the hole.

It’s Hard to Know What to Do

Most people understand that higher taxes can reduce their spendable income; but they may just not know what to do about it, especially when they’re in or nearing retirement. If you count yourself among that group, then it’s important to understand:

  • Today’s rates are known. For many households, they could be as favorable as they will be for some time.
  • Washington may stall. If you believe the polls, a divided government is a likely outcome in the midterm elections, and that could slow major tax action.3
  • Some tax deductions expire in 2028. The current structure won’t remain the same.

BOTTOM LINE: The next two years can be a planning window instead of a waiting period.
