Susan T. Buffett, the late wife of billionaire Warren Buffett, was set to inherit her husband’s fortune with plans to then give it away. Sadly in 2004, she died at the youthful age of 72.
In a 2006 interview published in Fortune magazine, Buffett said, “Susie and I always assumed that she would inherit my Berkshire stock and be the one who oversaw the distribution of our wealth to society, where both of us had always said it would go.”
“And Susie would have enjoyed overseeing the process” Buffett continued. “She was a little afraid of it, in terms of scaling up. But she would have liked doing it, and would have been very good at it. And she would have really stepped on the gas.”
The tragedy of this situation (emphasis added) is that Susie missed out in LIFETIME doing something she “would have enjoyed” and “been very good at”!
The tragedy in life for people with wealth – even amounts significantly less than Buffett’s wealth – is the deep seated desire and capacity to do something they would ENJOY, but never the FREEDOM to go do it.
The capacity, ability, and desire exists… what’s missing, is the clarity and confidence to take ACTION.
